Gus Belliveau lived a private, self-sufficient life in a small cottage in the middle of Bridgetown. He lived alone, grew a lot of his own food and bought his clothes at Frenchys, a second-hand thrift store. Once he found three new coats there, all the same, and they suited him perfectly. He bought them all so he would have enough good coats to last all his days. This portrait was painted quite early in the series; it has large sections of pure watercolour wash as well as extensive drybrush work. It also makes use of the repeated figure, a motif that the artist has used a number of times.
